Greensleeves Beauty Shots

I voted, then I did my errands and on my way home I drove by this gate and KNEW it would be a perfect location for beauty shots of the Greensleeves Zebra quilt.

I think this is such a pretty quilt. Showing you this also gives me an opportunity to remind you of the updates I made to the Zebra Quilt Tutorial, available here, in my Etsy shop. I have added ten pages to the tutorial. I showed what to do if you cut a triangle wrong, a more efficient way to cut the pieces, and I have added instructions to make the Fourth of July quilt.

PRIZM Beauty Shots

This is the PRIZM quilt. It's a Zebra quilt in the Ribbons version. I just love the way the bright colors sashay across the quilt.

Here's another shot.

And you thought this was easy!

PRIZM Flimsy Complete

If you're paying attention (that's a theoretical you, not you, you) a border fabric is obvious.

But that often means clearing the clutter that was in your head first. Sigh.

Yup, this Tula Pink fabric was really the only choice for a border around the PRIZM quilt. The border could not have been any of the brights in this quilt or they would have "stuck" to the border sunk back and let the big triangular sail shapes take over. Not. Going. To. Happen.

So here it is, in all it's brilliant colorful glory.

PRIZM Takes Shape

I wondered if I had something better than polka dots in my stash for the lighter triangles in the PRIZM quilt. I had to really hunt to find these, and before I could make any changes I had to make sure I had SIX light sort of pale fabric, and enough of them. As you can see from the photo above, I did.

Last night, as the Alcatraz / Medvedev match went through the third and fourth sets, I cut my strips and this morning I sewed them together and cut them into triangles.

(btw, WHAT A MATCH! NOBODY saw that coming.)

Here are the warm tones.

And here are the cool ones. They are separated with various WOWs.

I arranged the lights differently than I have in the past. I decided to make them extend beyond the bright triangles and "continue the wave", sorta. I did a colored drawing so you could see it better.

And if you look at the drawing and think, "that's kinda muddy," you're right. In Design, dark areas tend to pop forward (visually,  unless you do something to push them back) In this case, using the WOWs between the pale strips connects the light areas visually, and because they don't have a lot of contrast, they don't "fight" with the bright blocks, and sink nicely to the background, allowing the bright sashaying shapes to come forward and command your attention, which is what I want them to do.

In the drawing I didn't bother taking the time to make it fussy - I wanted to convey the idea that the lighter areas were connected to the shapes by their color.

The contrast between the two sets of triangles is what is required to make this particular quit a success. You need the primary shapes (in this example, the six primary colors) to have a great degree of contrast to the fabrics that make up the secondary shapes (the paler triangles. In the earlier versions of the pink quilt...

I had fairly strong contrasts between the pairs in the sashaying triangles, but the secondary triangles didn't really have any place to go. Their darks were often equal in value to the lights directly adjacent. So the sashaying triangles did their thing, sorta, but the lighter triangles really distracted from that. And THEIR dark fabrics didn't sink back into the background, so they fought with the sashaying ones.

I believe that if you have to THINK about what a design is trying to do so you can figure it out, then the design is a failure. PERIOD.

What's kinda funny, is that the green version, Greensleeves seems to work in spite of this:
In Greensleeves, the sashaying shapes are LIGHTER, and while the contrasting shapes are not all darker fabrics, (they are generally duller, or less intense) there is a kind of ambiguity that makes it work. The other thing that makes it work is the sashaying shapes have brighter, more patterned fabrics which capture your eye. And this photo is somewhat deceiving. In real life, this quilt is much more successful than in the photograph.

That the green one works better than the pink one is also due to the fact that there is a larger range of values to work with in green than there is in pink. Between light green to dark green there is an ocean of difference. But between light pink and dark pink, not so much (and available fabric makes it less so.)

Now, Gail. You didn't like the reworked pink with whitish because there was, in your estimation, too much blue in the white. To wit:

However, it was the biggest piece of light anything in my stash that was big enough (yardage wise) to do what I needed to do. I didn't mind the blue, because there are several kinds of color contrast: Value, Hue,  and also Temperature. The pink quilt use primarily Value contrast, so introducing a cool bluish white was another way to make the pink show up. Besides, I keep telling everyone that pink is really nothing more than a light red violet. So in color formula it is this: Red = R, Violet = Red + Blue. Thus pink is a light RRB. Blue is an inherent part of pink, so the blue was not out of place.

If you don't LIKE something, that's a SUBJECTIVE opinion. It doesn't mean the design is bad or wrong.

Lastly, some have asked WHY did I take this apart? What did I think was WRONG with it?

The answer: Nothing. Nothing whatsoever was WRONG with that quilt. It was perfectly lovely. It was fine. It was OK. It was predictable.

THAT was what was wrong with it. It did not SING! It did NOT say "LOOK AT ME!! LOOK AT ME SOME MORE!!!! LOOK AT ME AGAIN!!! Don't look AWAY! ME! ME! ME! LOOK AT MMEEEEE!!!!"

Now, it's OK to laugh. But I am quite serious. With my quilts, I want to grab you by the collar and say LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME SOME MORE! OH YOU JUST FOUND SOMETHING YOU DIDN'T EXPECT? LOOK AT ME AGAIN."

This quilt was an epic wimp. So I took it apart.

Learning From Mistakes

I've sewn all the blocks together for the pink and white quilt. It will have a pink border, but I haven't yet decided which pink.

The quilt reminds me of my granddaughter's pink and white striped dress.

The quilt did not turn out the way I expected it to, but it gave me some ideas. Learning from a mistake is a good thing. The previous ribbons quilts (Yellow Ribbons and Greensleeves) were successful because of the value changes between the "waving ribbon" and the big triangles. I like to play with your head, and make the colors flip flop back and forth, but that can be tricky for the average quiltmaker. Making the quilt essentially a two color quilt makes it more accessible.

Then again, you know me. I can never leave well enough alone. All you have to do is look at the photo above and you can see where this is going.

OOOoooh!  Yeah! (As Julie would say, "Go Lynne, go!")

So, go Lynne did.

Breaking Up

This may look OK, but I don't like the way the pink stripes carry across the lighter blocks. You almost can't tell that they are different fabrics. The whole point of this arrangement is to focus on the swaying of the darker triangles but those horizontal stripes hold them back.

So I thought, what the hell, why am I worried about trying to making those secondary triangles do something when what I really want them to disappear?

And then I thought, what at the hell, it's already broken, so why don't I just keep going and break it some more?

So instead of making the secondary triangles pink, I made them white-ish.

In fact, I made the light triangles all the same. I'll look at it for a day or so before I sew it all together.

Back In The Studio

I'm wrestling with this beast again. I set it aside to work on the green version. I thought I had ordered more fabrics for it, but I was wrong. I had to go fabric shopping yesterday (oh gee darn). But It just wasn't enough I usually buy fabrics with punch, snap and pizzaz, and to finish this quilt, I need some fabrics that are more, shall we say, subservient. While I had fabric like that in my stash I didn't have ENOUGH of them. Sigh.

Sometimes I'm smart enough to notice things that don't work right away, and sometimes it takes me a bit longer. See that middle lozenge? It's more red at the bottom, and then in the top triangle it is more pink. It bothered me because the top part of that shape made me think it was something else, and I need that shape to be unified.

This is when I am glad I cut my strips bigger than I will really need. I cut another big triangle. It isn't 100% perfect, but I think it's better than it was.

In this quilt I want you to see the "ribbons" twisting and sa-shaying. I want the other shapes (those big long triangles on the sides) to fall a bit into the background. Yeah, I know they aren't there yet.

So yet again this sucker is going to wait. But fear not, I do have work in the studio that will keep me excited for a few days!

By Jove!

There's really nothing more annoying than thinking you have it, only to realize there is a fly in the ointment.

Some of you probably think this is pretty good. I know Jean from NZ said she'd be happy with this, but alas, I see something that bugs me (several things, actually) and I had to ORDER MORE FABRIC, DAMMIT.

And then I had to WAIT!!!

Oh, the indignity!

Anyway, the light fabrics for the darkish triangles arrived (I already had replacements from my stash for the dark fabrics), and after a trip through the washer and dryer, and after being ironed, I cut strips and made my blocks. OF COURSE this isn't IT.

I needed ten more iterations.

THIS is it.

This I will sew together.  It needs a title, or a suggestion for one. It will need a narrow border, and then it will be ready. I will also work on the pink one. (Darn it, I needed to order more fabric for that one too.)

AND... I found a slightly more efficient way to cut fabric for this particular variation of the Zebras quilts. this one needs 24 different fabrics that play nicely together in interesting and subtle ways, but sewing a WOF panel of 8 strips (for each pair) is a bit wasteful, and I figured out a better way to do it. So at some point a revision to the Zebra quilt tutorial will happen.

AND EVEN BETTER... I am going to make a Zebra variation that I have NOT done before. Right now that will be a Red, White and Blue quilt. That may change as I have not yet even started to cut fabrics, but I think it will be fun and summery!

WOO HOO! I have my mojo back, finally!

From One Thing to Another...

These are some of the greens for the new green quilt. As you can see, I have set out the dark green fabric strips over the lighter green to see how it might work together.

I had thought that these two would work, but as you can see, this pair don't bring out the best in each other, the way the pair at the top photo do. This is why you have to put things next to each other and try them out
These are a couple of samples I've sewn together to see how it's going to look. I have several fabrics on order, so I can't really get started until those arrive. I thought to myself, DAMN! I don't want to wait. Then I looked over at my worktable and saw lots of PINK fabrics....

I bet you can see where this is going.

(What? You never associated a humpback whale with the color pink?) The photo above shows something I always do when I make a Zebra quilt. I try to sew the fabrics together in such a way that the alternate strips keep the pattern on the fabric going. You can see it in the whales above,

And also in the lighter fabric above. I think this helps the design flow because your eye connects the shapes and continues the design. In other words, it LOOKS right.

So here are some pink ladies dancing. (Maybe that's a quilt title?)

So this is a Zebra quilt, and you can get a tutorial here on how to make it. You can see more examples of my Zebra quilts here.

The Next Thing

I have had Green on the brain lately. These are some of the greens I bought recently.

Here are some greens from my stash and a couple of new ones.

The other night I was tired, and went to bed really early. I woke up about 2 in the morning and had the idea to make a green version of the Yellow Ribbons quilt, shown above.

I am EXCITED for the first time in a long time about a new quilt.  Stay tuned!

Saturday

Early Saturday morning I got a notice that my pink pillows from Spoonflower would be delivered. They are everything I wanted them to be!

It was supposed to rain on Sunday, so I decided to drive to Peterborough NH on Saturday. I specifically wanted to visit the Monadnock Oil & Vinegar Company. I wanted more of their Lemon Infused Olive Oil. I also wanted more of their Cara Cara Orange & Vanilla Balsamic Vinegar. Of course I didn't stop there.

I saw this recipe card and decided I had to try it. I already have the Coconut White Balsamic Vinegar, so I brought home a bottle of Blood Orange Olive Oil too.

Just down the hall from MOV is Ana Marie Chocolates, and I love their milk chocolate covered Oreo cookies. It's the only way I will eat Oreo cookies. Since I have lost 30 + pounds, I need to be careful with sweets, so I only brought home four of these beauties. I shall savor them.

When I got home, it was sunny, so I decided to take beauty shots of the Yellow Ribbons quilt. Here it is on an old stone wall.

I also like this picture of the quilt tossed over a rail fence with the field in the background.

You know I keep telling you to listen to your instincts? Here the quilt is draped over a gate to the neighborhood community garden. The gate is made or rough wood and chicken wire. Something about it called to me, and I tossed the quilt over the top and got this picture. I think these three are the best.

The Yellow Ribbons Quilt is a Zebra Quilt. It's easier to make than you think, and goes together pretty quick. You can get my tutorial here, if you'd like to make one yourself.
