Red Sticks

OK, Here is a photo of the completed Red Sticks quilt. It's bright sun out, so I can't hang it on the fence just yet.  Everybody who sees this quilt loves it, which kind of surprises me since most folks don't name RED as their favorite color.  Anyway, I'll post more photos of this quilt as soon as I can.

Several people asked me yesterday if I am REALLY going to donate that quilt to the victims of the Colorado fires.

The answer is YES.  I was the recipient of the generosity of a lot of cat lovers when they raised money to send me to my goddaughter's funeral several years ago.  Donating a quilt is a way to repay that generosity.  Plus, it's just the right thing to do. I have an extra quilt that won't be doing anything, and there are dozens of families who have lost EVERYTHING. It's the least I can do.

Perhaps you can join me and donate a quilt of your own.

More Red

Millie helped me choose the binding fabric for the Red Sticks quilt.  We both felt like the black and white inner border was enough, and the quilt needed a red binding.
But it didn't have to be a solid red, so we picked this one.

Binding Red Sticks

My grandfather ran a furniture store, so I've inherited some nice pieces of furniture. One of them is a Duncan Phyffe style drop leaf mahogany dining room table. With the two extra leaves in place, and the table fully extended, it's 48" by 100" (122 x 255 cm) long. This table the one my family gathers around for Thanksgiving. (There were 12 of us last year.)  The big table makes it easy to add the binding to a quilt.

(I protect the tabletop with a painted floorcloth.)

The Big W

The dishes are done. The laundry is folded. The bed is made. Everything is ready.  I'll be watching the Men's final at Wimbledon.  I love Roger Federer, and I'll root for him, but I have always had a soft spot in my heart for Andy Murray. It's going to be a great match.

I'm not going to answer the telephone. I'm not going to be checking my email.  I'm going to watch the Tennis.  I might add the binding to the red sticks quilt if I get too nervous watching the match.

see ya later!

Christmas in July

Not one, not two, but THREE quilts arrived at my house yesterday from Chris, who does all the quilting on my quilts.

The quilts are Red Sticks, and the two scrappy Gizzy quilts. (One here, the other here.)

Now I have to figure out what to use for binding!

Pick Up Sticks Flimsy Completed

I've finished the Red Sticks blocks, added the inner and outer borders and sewn it all up together.  I'm really happy with it.  Now I've got to get the backing ready and send it off to Chris for quilting.

Red Sticks with Borders

OK, I made all the Red-on-red blocks. I knew adding an inner border would mean I'd have to add a bit to the outermost blocks to accommodate the width of the inner border. No problem in theory, but in practice....

Well, I forgot.  So I had to do a bit of fussy sewing.  You might be able to see where I had to make up for my brain fog. Since the quilt will be mine, I'm not worried about it. I've only got the borders done on three sides, I hope to finish it today.

I'm pretty excited, because it looks really good so far.

Red On Red Stick Blocks

Last night I started inserting red strips in the red blocks.  My goal is to have the blocks finished later today.

Red on Red Sticks

I have had a lot going on since I got back from my vacation. It's been crazy at work, and I've been tired when I get home, so I haven't been doing a lot of sewing, but I will be getting my groove back real soon.

In the meantime, here are a few of the Red on Red blocks I have made for the Red Sticks quilt.

The black and white is the fabric I will be using as the inner border.  I love the verve and the energy it provides.
Yes, this is Dr Seuss fabric.  I love having lots of little in-jokes in all my quilts.  You have to look closely.

Back to the Red Sticks

I sewed the blocks together for the Red Sticks quilt. Millie helps quite a lot.  I've decided to add a thin black and white border around this before I add another row of red blocks. The border blocks will be red with red sticks, and I've already sewn several.

All The Red Sticks

Here are all 63 of the Red Sticks blocks laid out on my dining room floor.I'm not completely committed to this layout, but so far so good.  I'll look at this photo for a while, and if I want to move things around, I will.  Around these will be a narrow strip of one of the black and white fabrics, then all these blocks will be surrounded by red-on-red blocks, then a red binding and a red backing.

Red Sticks Blocks

I trimmed all the blocks for my version of the Red Sticks Quilt. I may lay them out tonight and start sewing them together.

Or not. My Four Seasons quilt is all quilted, and is visiting my friend Julie for a little while before it comes back home for me to finish.  Julie's got some great photos, so you should go over and check out Chris's fabulous free motion quilting.

Red Stick-a-thon

Here are all the Red Sticks blocks I have so far, 51 of them. I need 12 more, then I start the red-on-red ones for the "border."  Why so many more?

When I realized that offsetting the strips made the blocks smaller, I had to adapt. I had originally planned on 8" finished blocks, but I won't get them that size, they'll be about 7-1/4" finished.  I had a particular size in mind, and to get that size, I needed more blocks. So today is Red Sticks Day.  If I can, I want to make ALL the blocks in time for The Big Game tomorrow.  I will trim my blocks down to size while I "watch" the game.

Otherwise I'm pretty sure I won't have any hair or fingernails left by the end of game.

More Red Sticks

Now I have 30 red sticks blocks. I need 18 more for the center, then I will make 32 red-on-red for the "border."

I really like this block, with the red fans, the black and white stripes and the orange fabric that echoes the stripes in each.
This is another block where I placed the patterned piece quite deliberately.
I like this block too, with the obvious mis-alignment of the green strip.

Remember I said I need 18 more blocks for the center of the quilt? Here are the six pinks, the six blues and the other fabrics I will use to make up those 18 blocks. You can click the photo, then click again if you want to see the fabrics in detail.

I want to move quickly, because Chris has finished quilting the Four Seasons quilt, and I should see it sometime late next week. I will be eager to finish it so I can bring it to Quilted Threads for display.

Red Sticks Update

I have made 27 Red Sticks blocks. I started with 8-1/2" squares of red fabric.

Here are a couple of the newest blocks.  This one is an homage to my pal Julie. She sent me this red fabric, loves black and white as much as I do and is crazy about purple.
I am particularly fond of this next one.
You don't think the fabric placement was an accident, do you? Because, it isn't. I really did want it to look like that. I love putting these kinds of "in jokes" in all my quilts.

By the way, I'll be teaching a class called, "Houses and Trees, O My!" at Quilted Threads in Henniker NH on Saturday May 5th, and a repeat "Letter Play" class on Saturday June 23rd. Click here for more information.

Red Red

While "watching" tv this weekend, I cut red fabric into squares for the Pick Up Sticks quilt.
You all know how much I love large prints for the backings of my quilts.  This one won't be any different. I've  selected this Philip Jacobs design.

Seventeen Red Sticks blocks.  I figure I need 80.

Pick Up Sticks

I'm enjoying making the Red Sticks.  These blocks are about 8-1/2" square.

Remember, get to work. Pick up your pencil.

Pick Up the Pencil

When I was drawing, I had a regular studio schedule.  Home from work by 6, feed my son and myself, get the dishes done, and be at the drawing table by 8 PM, where I'd draw for two hours, stop at 10 PM and be in bed by 10:30. At least one night a week I'd teach an adult ed drawing class from 7 to 10 PM. Friday nights I'd do my grocery shopping, and on Saturday I'd get up and head right into the studio and draw for a couple of hours while my son slept late.  Sometimes I'd get back in the studio later in the day and draw for about an hour and a half.  Sundays I would draw for about two hours. My limit over two days was six hours. In this way I got about 10 - 12 hours of drawing a week.  Remember, I was a single parent of a school age child, and I worked at least one (usually two) nights a week. The housework generally went straight to hell.

My drawings took hundreds of hours, and I rarely completed two a year. When the drawing was going well, wild horses couldn't pull me away, but if it went badly, I'd have a hard time getting into the studio to work.  If I didn't draw regularly, if I had an issue with a drawing, had a problem I was having a hard time resolving, I'd stop my routine, avoid the work, and stay out of the studio.

The longer I stayed out of the studio - and it could sometimes stretch into weeks - it became harder and harder to get back in there and "pick up the pencil."  It wasn't just the problem in the drawing, it was the idea of getting back in there that was hard.  I would imagine the pencil getting bigger and bigger -- the size of a baseball bat, the size of a bedpost, finally, the size of a telephone pole -- that eventually it was impossible to get in there and get back to work.  It would haunt me.  All I had to do was to get in there and pick up the pencil.

All.

The solution, of course, was to simply get in there and pick up the "the f****ing pencil." I knew I was fine when I would wander into the studio, lean over the drafting chair, pick up a pencil and start noodling around in an insignificant area of the drawing. When my back would hurt from bending over, I'd straighten myself up, pull out the chair, sit down and continue working.

There was never any magic to it. The solution was always to get in there and pick up the f***ing pencil.  And yes, that's just the way I thought of it. The F-bomb pencil.  Pick up the damn pencil. Get to work.

There are a lot of folks who wait for inspiration to strike, and then they get started.  The artist Chuck Close famously dismissed those when he said,

"Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work..."

I think he's dead on right.  (There's more to the quote, of course. Taken out of context it sounds nasty, but really isn't. Go here to read the whole quote.) You generate more ideas when you are working than when you aren't.

Which is why sometimes a clean studio is sometimes more intimidating than a messy one. After all, if it's already messy it can't usually get much worse, so you have less to "lose."

So although I do have a couple of things I really SHOULD be sewing, if none of them motivates me (and right now, none of them do), I find something to "noodle" around with, something that sparks my interest, but doesn't demand a lot of concentration. Once my conscious brain turns off by doing something that can appear mindless, my UN-conscious brain goes straight into creative mode and ideas start bubbling up and the next thing I know I'm in the happy zone of wrestling with a creative idea, of getting it out of my head and into fabric and up on the design wall.

Which brings me to what I have been playing with - I was browsing through the second collaboration book between Gwen Marston and Freddy Moran and I found "Red Sticks."

I love Red. It's my favorite color.  So when I was at Quilted Threads last Saturday, I bought seven yards of the most glorious RED's! I'm taking a detour folks, the Quilt-along is gonna have to wait. I've picked up the pencil. I've picked up the Red Sticks.
