I love hearing from quilters who make quilts using my tutorial.
This is Kathy Ray, and the bird quilt she made for her mother, "The Spirit of Wally Ray."
That's a cool enough thing, but Kathy made all the birds from her late father's neckties. (Her father's name is Wally Ray.)
She said the first had to stabilize all of them.
I asked her if her father had owned any really cool, colorful ties. "No, they were all pretty boring." But Kathy has made a variety of birds, all quite handsome.
Kathy even quilted it herself. (Color me impressed!)
Kathy made this signature panel for the quilt. I think every quilt should have a signature panel of some kind.
The quilt won a Best of Show Viewer's Choice award when it was exhibited earlier this year, a prize I think was very well deserved.
Awesome job, Kathy!
If you would like to make some of your own birds, you can get my tutorial here, at my Etsy shop. It's an instant download, so you can get started right away.
And if you have used some of my birds in a quilt of your own, I'd love to see pictures. If you've shown a bird quilt in a quilt show, I'd love to know that too! Send me an email (and pictures too) at patcherymenagerie AT gmail DOT com.

Absolutely awesome job. And I thought it very interesting to see birds made from 'pretty boring' fabrics - they turned out rather well and because all of them are made from those kinds of fabrics, they work very well together.

Amazing quilt, fabulous quilting, and the story, tying it all together with love.
What a beautiful gift for her mum. I am impressed that she used her dads ties , what a great way to remember him.
Ties are very tricky to use because they must be stabilized. What a wonderful gift for her mother. A beautiful quilt.
Brilliant!
What a cool way to use up ties and make something memorable. I think I still have my Dad's ties somewhere. Now I need ambition!
Beyond fantastic - such an original interpretation and a memory quilt as well. Fabulous and that ribbon is SO well deserved.
Greetings Lynne; Oh my..thanks for such a kind blogpost about my "Spirit of Wally Ray" quilt. It was so therapeutic to create for my Mom. She adores the final work and I keep having to encourage her to actually use it. She thinks it is too good for everyday; but that's why I made it...for her to still be wrapped in my Dad everyday! Just like they did for nearly 58 years. Continued blessings to you and your talented followers! ~ Kathy Ray
Oh, it is a lovely quilt with such a great story. Congratulations to Kathy on finishing such an amazing quilt.
Great quilt, great story. Thanks so much for posting!
Beautiful!
What a great way to reuse
Great story and quilt ties too!
I still have the "Gizzy" quilt(lap quilt) my sister made from one of your info posts too ;)
Nancy and the kitties
My father, who passed away last fall, loved to watch birds visit the numerous feeders in their yard. I have his boring shirts and have made one bird. The completed quilt will not be show worthy, but i think my step mother will appreciate it anyway.
This is a wonderful idea and so beautifully executed!
What a lovely idea to honor her father and give such love to her mother. The quilt is beautiful. Love those birds.
