One of the things I love most about teaching is watching a student take an idea I throw out and run with it, turn it on its head and knock it out of the park. Buffy, from Vermont, has made a bird that is juggling asterisks.
I mean, where do I begin?
Buffy has made small asterisks. She as made a bird with its mouth open. She has used her fabric to suggest an eye and features on the bird's face. And she has made a bird's wings extend in front of its body. Buffy said The Selvage Fairy's hummingbird gave her the insight to make the wings on her juggling bird.
Shoot! Color me impressed. Color me impressed as hell!
No, I can't tell you how to do this. But I'm still happy to accept volunteer birds for my Student Bird quilt. Email me at PatcheryMenagerie AT Gmail DOT com if you would like to send me a bird.
If you want to make one of my (albeit somewhat more traditional) birds, you can get my tutorial here, at my Etsy shop.

WHOA !! That is one talented student!! Knocked my socks off. so I can only imagine your 1st impression which I'm sure was more than your printed response.
I can't even begin to think of putting all those tiny pieces together, not screwing up the seam allowances, and getting that final product. The creativity that is bouncing around the world right now is astounding.
Walking legs!!!
Most impressive. Nice work Buffy!!
I am so interested in seeing all these students' birds! They are all wonderful! Thank you for sharing them with us. Can't wait to see what comes in next.
Buffy's bird ROCKS!
Thank you for your kind comments! This bird was fun to make! As Lynne said, I owe the idea on how to make juggling wings to The Selvedge Fairy's hummingbird. Ronda's singing bird in her Covid quilt gave me the idea on how to create an open beak. Thank you both! And Lynne's many amazing tutorials got me started on making asterisks, using fabric strategically to do some of the work, enjoying making a wide assortment of birds and, more generally, thinking much more creatively about quilts. Can't thank her enough!
I thought the asterisks could be corona viruses. As in juggling everyday life around the virus.
That is so amazing! Absolutely love it!
That's delightful! Well done, Buffy.
