Two by Two and Doobie Doobie Do

My Mother always freaks out about what I do. "Lynne, you make quilts, you blog, you WORK, and you COOK." Yeah, well, I like to eat well, what can I say. So I got up yesterday and made some granola (because I can make it better, cheaper and healthier than I can buy it), then I cooked up some farro (love it in grain salads, which I will have for lunch this week), made two loaves of bread (again, better, cheaper, healthier than the stuff at the store), made some onion jam (great on sandwiches, pizza and pasta; again, part of the menu plan for the week), some sesame noodles, and then because I wanted something different, some salted caramel brownies. (Mine probably weren't cooked enough, but I never made this recipe before. Still they are damn good. I'll bring them to work and pass them around.) After I did all the dishes, I made the bed took a shower and then went into the studio to start sewing up the blocks for the Winter Whatever Quilt. Having done all that cooking ensured two things: 1. I didn't have to feel guilty for spending the rest of the day sewing; 2. I'd have something to eat whenever I got hungry. I didn't have to stop to cook. I do this cooking thing every single weekend, (obviously with different items) and I have done it for years. It makes the rest of my life easier. I'm not quite sure why my Mom freaks out about it. Later today I'll put a couple of lamb shanks on the stove to braise all afternoon. I'll have an easy dinner and leftovers for another meal this week.

Basically, I think (and plan). I'm always thinking. Part of this is making my life easier, so that's why I do it. To me, it's no big deal. I also love to cook, so for me this isn't work.

I started taking the blocks off the design wall, trimmed them up, paired them, and sewed them together.

yadda yadda yadda.

I have six vertical rows sewn together.

My friend the Selvage Fairy wrote to me and said this quilt didn't so much remind her of trees as it did ripples of water, even though she likes it anyway.

I do too, and the ripples thing works too.

Whatever makes your life easier is certainly worth doing! And when you work full-time, having planned out your week's food is definitely making life easier. I'm all for that! And, it's a real bonus if you love to love to cook. Good for you! I've done that for years, and it's worth the time it takes. Especially if you can sew guilt-free after the food is taken care of!

I think your quilt is shaping up quite nicely. I agree - it think it look like ripples on water, reflecting something colorful. It's been interesting to watch your progress on this and to "watch" your mind at work.

The brownies recipe looks great, and ripples, very apt.

My first thought was Mom could come do all the cooking and cleaning then? :-) Tongue and Cheek for sure.

Yea you for a lifestyle decision that works for you!

Not sure why your mom freaks out. Would she prefer you sit and watch Netflix and drink soda pop? My husband is gluten intolerant, so baking is always a hard time. I would bake more if I could get it to turn out decent- so we have to buy the bread and such. I plead ignorance, what is farro and is it gluten free? Love the whole process of this quilt unveil.

I am thinking that art doesn't need explaining as much as an open mind to experience it and find meaning. It may not be the artist's meaning, but this is a case of beauty is in the eye of the beholder as well as meaning.

It does look a lot like ripples on water. I really like the way it is looking.
The onion jam sounds really good. I make carmelized onions in the crockpot and freeze small batches for future use. LOVE sesame noodles!

I think this is a stunning piece, Lynne. I just love how simple forms can come together and cleverly create a completely amazing picture.
You are a busy girl and seem like a real 'doer'. I relate to that and also to your mother. I too worry still about my grown up children. Just like the loving, the worrying doesn't end. :)

Mum cooks ahead too and she is even retired. Wants to spend time doing fun stuffs, then just reheat things for meals.

A different type of rippling water perhaps. . . your quilt reminds me of the blurred objects seen when looking through a window that has rain running down it. The water often doesn't just run straight down, but zigs and zags. In the process straight things like tree trunks are distorted.

Well, all of those things are really important...except maybe work. That would definitely be the thing to drop.
