Dad

My father died in his sleep last night. He was 89 years old. This photo of the two of us was taken at a Father-Daughter dance when I was a freshman in high school.

I am glad I had the time with him that I did. He was always curious and open to new things. He loved to eat and laugh. He was proof positive that if you screwed up your life you could change and become a better person. He taught me that Life can be as happy or miserable as you choose to make it.

I have a lot of good memories and stories that I will treasure always.

Sending hugs your way and lots of caring thoughts. Would love to hear more about your father. It’s wonderful he got to give the quilt you made to the lady priest.

Thinking of you, Lynne. Thank you for sharing this news with us, and for posting stories and pics of him in your blog over the years. It seems that he lived his life virtually until the end and I hope that dying in his sleep was what he (and you) would have wanted for his end.

I am so glad you have lots of good memories and that you made the time to enjoy time with your dad, especially as an adult. (My dad died suddenly when I was in college so we missed out on an adult relationship.). Please be gentle with yourself as you grieve.

Lynne,

Very sorry to hear of your dad’s passing. My mom passed away August 1, at 96, so I share the pain of your loss. May all the years of happy memories, in some way, provide us both with needed comfort. While their physical being is no longer, they are always in our hearts and watching over us. God bless. Pat

I'm so sorry to hear this news, Lynne. I just went back in your blog to read your wonderful posts about your Dad. What rich memories, lessons, laughter and love you shared together for so many years. May they fortify you for the rest of your life. I've pasted below some of my favorites.

My Wish: Throughout this whole pandemic when somebody asked me what I was going to do first, "when this was over," my answer was the same, "go visit my dad and get a hug." Now that I have had both my Covid vaccine shots, and my dad has had his as well, I was able to visit him and get my hug.

The Lady Priest: We hit it off like gangbusters. My dad was thrilled. He has long had a special place in his heart for Marjorie, and the fact that she and I got on so well brought tears to his eyes. "Daddy," I said, "You gave Marjorie a quilt, but you also gave ME a friend! Thank you so much."

Getting Ready: Now, my dad and I work great together. He's easy to be with, and never lets anything get the better of him. Even if something goes wrong, we just put it right without any fuss.

So Wrong It's Right: Everything went wrong. We were late for the movie. We ate at the wrong restaurant, and somehow we ended up in the wrong theater, watching the wrong movie. "It's wrong, but it's right," my dad said. "Nah," I replied, "It was perfect."

So sorry for your loss. My Daddy (for that's what we Southern girls all call our fathers, no matter the age) died in his sleep almost six years ago. It still seems like I should be able to visit him and ask for advice. Cherish your memories.

Such a hard time for you. Even though we know that our loved one is no longer in pain, or struggling with challenges, it's always too soon. Take care and remember, He Always Loved You.
