Blue Ice Grows

I made another set of blocks and put them up on the design wall.

Even though I added some darks to the edges of the blocks, this still looks ok, but nothing to write home about.

So I straightened everything out, and then filled in the sides with the dark fabrics. I need two rows at the bottom to get this the size I want. And I am 90% sure that green box in the lower left is going to go, but when I got this far, and stepped back, I thought it was looking rather good.

I picked out some of my favorite of these fabrics, and then chose center fabrics for them and made about fourteen blocks, the set them up on the design wall and started tinkering. An hour or so later, I had this, and felt I was making progress.

After another hour, I had this. It isn't perfect, and I want to look at it in the computer before I start sewing it up, but I am getting closer. This is a LOT harder than it looks.

Also... It is so interesting to work on something like this and NOT get any comments. I can practically hear you all thinking, "I'm not sure about this." Or, "I'm going to have to wait and see what Lynne does." Or, "Gee, it's kinda dark." Naturally it is a lot prettier in real life, and I know I will have to make some changes. I can see blocks that don't really work, and I know I have to make more. I will talk about the fabric "spacers" in my next post, and which fabric works, which doesn't, and why.

Yes, it is wait and see. Blue is my favorite color to work with on quilts. I have the book. You are making great progress. Keep going, please.

'90% sure that green box in lower left is going to go..etc." Now I can't find it. Did you end up taking it out, or am I blind ?? :-)

And yes it is a "dark" top, but still beautiful and still we can see the different darks. I love it

Blue Ice so works for the title of this quilt....
I can soooo see that in this process...

Also its funny to be how when you ( or I ) take a picture of a quilt right in front of us you see/ notice something different then you do with the actual quilt....
Now add to that the difference of your camera and my computer monitor and it adds more layers between each of us and the actual quilt...

Hopefully your readers are supersizing the photos so they can see the many distinctions in the dark fabrics - Blue Ice is definitely one that will look more stunning after being sewn together and quilted and NOT flat on a design wall! Just keep going . . .

I'm still following this, in the waiting to see what Lynne does camp.

After the "value over color" reminder, I keep squinting at the photos. That one green(?) box block is better gone. That fabric is good in the little centers, but that big one.... my monitor says yellow and it stuck out like a beacon. Odd that the white ones fit right in though, maybe because there are more of them? No, the more I look, it's because the whites all have blue in them, but the green box did not???

I think you are having too much fun with this! I'm away from home without fabric to play with and am so jealous. Enjoying the show. :)

I'm really liking this. And, yes, I think it is much harder than it looks to distribute all those deep colors around the quilt to flow and avoid 'blobs'. But the lighter colors just pop and really glow. This is so rich and mysterious feeling. And I love your fussy cuts! Beautiful.

It is fascinating to watch you work. I am always in a state of amazement watching you. I can't wait to see your final decision. The concept is simple but the execution is very complicated. Thanks for sharing with us. Onward!

I love watching your creative juices going as you make and change and rearrange. It's coming together nicely.

I like the way the lighter blocks seem to float on the darker background but that is only my preference and an idea that one day I may try not at the moment though I do like watching your design process but have found your thoughts have made me picker with other quilters designs and one I spotted today was shocking colour selection and she was selling the pattern as well ,I would not buy from her as it was but again that is me.

There is something about this that reminds me of some housing way back in the 70's(?) where they set concrete square rooms on top of each other for apartments, slightly offset, and with windows
