Guessing Game

I like this, with the bottom stopping like this, with complete hex stars. I like the way it looks like fluttering banners. If I keep this layout, I have to figure out how to fill out the rest of the space at the bottom.

If I filled the design with scrap triangles, the quilt would look like this. It's fine, but it's kinda predictable.

I thought, well, if I am going to go with dropping the blocks off, I need to fill the space. What if I made triangles from White with Colors fabrics and tried them as the diamonds? Uh, nope! Damn those are ugly!

Here I've filled the space with black on white fabrics. If you look closely you can see I've tried to use the darker black on white prints to create the diamonds. I'm not sure this is working for me.

I'm going to have to think about this a bit more.

I find the idea of the first photo a lot. Maybe you should try filling the space with very light B&W fabric, so that you get the impression of a banner but save yourself the trouble of a non-rectangular quilt. I think it would be a wonderful quilt.

I love layout #1 - as you say, it looks like a banner. If you make triangles of Black-on-White prints and frame them with more B-o-W prints like your colored triangles, the lower part of your layout will look like low volume background behind your banner.

Do you have to fill in the bottom? Why not leave it as in the top photo? Yes, binding the angular edges would not be fun but would create the banner effect.

I wonder what piano keys of various light blues would look like at the bottom of #1. In my mind it would look like the banner fluttering in the sky

Fill the empty space of the top one with off white. It looks good with the off white back ground.
