This or That

I made a couple of changes. I know which one I prefer, so I don't need your help, but I am curious to know what you think, and why.

This one?

Or this one?

Spring comes forth! Second one, glad you removed the plaid and the gray art deco. It looks more like spring and the small diamonds are speaking out. I really like the post card print.

I like the 2nd version...that yellow plaid was too busy for my taste... I like the yellow floral much more. Beautiful quilt!!

I prefer the lower one. In the top one the geometric large diamonds draw a lot of attention and with just one geometric print for me that is less harmonious. It either needs another geometric or none for my personal preference.

No yellow plaids please. 2nd photo has my vote :-)

Definitely the second one. The plaid didn’t sing.

The second one as the yellow floral has the same scale as the other large diamonds and don’t jump out like the yellow plaid. I’m always amazed at the work it takes to bring beauty from a jumble of color and patterns.

I agree, the yellow plaid did nothing for this quilt. Without it the flowers have a much nicer flow.

The second one. The plaid was too much. I love looking at your works in progress–it is helping me to try new things : )

I as well prefer the 2nd one. I found the yellow checks distracting.

2nd one. Yellow plaid jumps out because they are off-kilter. Maybe if the plaid followed the ‘grainline’ of the quilt, they would have worked

I love the second because you removed the fabric that I just couldn't reconcile with the rest of the quilt

The second one. That bright plaid was really screaming for attention in the first picture.

Like everyone else, I like the second one best. From the start I didn't like the plaid "atttention getter". It wasn't a team player, but screamed, "look at me". Now my eyes swim over the quilt instead of going directly to the yellow plaid. BUT it is your and Julie's quilt so you're the only ones who need to be pleased with it.

Echoing the same sentiment as the others, the second quilt presents a better harmony. The yellow floral plays well with the other fabrics. The plaid fabric in top version just snatched your gaze and refused to let you see the rest of the quilt.

The gray fabric with the 'eyes' in the top version didn't quite play harmoniously either. It was another stand out but not as much as the plaid fabric. The bottom top plays better harmoniously overall. Of course there is nothing wrong with having a shock fabric as long as it plays well with its neighbors. All in MHO.

I know i would really enjoy one of these quits. You do such a nice job creating them.

Second one, mainly as it has more of the "eye" sections which are fun to pick out.

Agree with the no go on the yellow plaid. Doesn't feel right in a sea of what appears to be floral.

I definitely prefer the second one. Do not care for that yellow plaid as it just seems to distract from everything else.

Ha! You are so good at color I’m always learning from you! Yes, the second one is my choice too. New yellow floral is much prettier and smooths out and simplifies the color scheme. With the yellow orange plaid gone I’m not sure the small orange diamonds should stay.

I prefer the second example. I find the yellow "plaid" very distracting. I look forward to your choice and the reason(s) for your choice.

The second one, definitely. It looks more homogenous, and I think that's what you were going for, right?

Yes, that plaid is to distracting from the design. Second one is lovely.

Lynne here... My friend Mary in Wolfeboro never leaves comments - instead she sends me long emails. I thought you would all enjoy hearing her thoughts!

So, you're soliciting opinions on your Julie-Lynne-partnership quilt. In that case...

The biggest problem with the top quilt is that the yellow & orange large diamonds have stripes in them. The stripes plus the bold colors make me wonder if this is a quilt about plaid diamonds or a quilt about flowers. If plaid diamonds, then consider tossing other stuff and put in more plaids. If flowers, then chuck the plaids, which is one of the changes you made to get the bottom layout.

The four plaid diamonds also look very spotty. My eyes go from spot to spot to spot to spot without seeing much else in the quilt.

On the other hand, I much prefer the colors of the yellow diamonds with red-orange stripes in the top layout. The red-orange stripes add welcome zing and the yellow behind them is brighter than the more muted yellow floral diamonds in the bottom version. The red-orange stripes give a place for the tiny bright red-orange diamonds to hang their hats. Paradoxically, it's the bright yellow with red-orange touches that bring the quilt to life.

So, I guess that if this situation were in my studio instead of yours, I'd start with the bottom version and see if I could add more red-orange and bright yellow in small doses, here and there, to see if that would help. (California poppies?)

So, what's Julie telling you that she likes? This quilt is for her, isn't it? What are her thoughts?

Julie's thoughts on all this - like the rest of you, I am liking the big billowy tulips on yellow that replaced the yellow plaid. I adore that plaid fabric in real life but it just didn't play as well with the rest of the large scale fabrics because it's scale wasn't as BIG as the others. Ditto for the op art eyes fabric. I like it a lot, but its scale was not in line with the other giant diamond fabrics. SO - of these two iterations, I prefer the second photo. Pretty sure we're close but we aren't done yet - there are more medium diamonds to be cut and placed and more of the four patch diamonds to be constructed. Only then will Lynne be able to fine tune the final layout . . . which will be, of course, nothing less than GLORIOUS.

Surely it’s not the top one that is your preference? Number two all the way! I’m happy to see the demise of the physcodelic one as well...

I agree the second one is more harmonious without the diamonds, but I like the brightness of the first. So I"m with Mary, more pops of bright please because it's not singing yet. Thanks for letting everyone chime in...!
