How about a piano key outer border, laying the strips perpendicular to the quilt edges rather than laying them parallel?

It looks terrific! I just got the new AQS magazine and there was a fabulous black and white and multicolored quilt project in it. I just love it and it reminds me of your Laughing out loud.
I'd use the happy scrappy colors from the center and create a scrappy, slightly wonky piano key outer border (strips of varying widths). I really like the inner border, but the outside needs to be playful and quirky. IMHO.

I'm hopeless at advising people, as I need to physically audition to see if it's right. the narrow sashing fabric border is perfect though - it gives some rest between the quilt and the eventual border.
