Here is the bag from the top. You can see the zipper closure. I saw this in a magazine. The zipper is sewn to two fabric pieces called "flanges." I'd say this was an easy way of making a zipper closure, but I can already hear my son saying "easy for YOU maybe..." so I won't.
With the handles down, you get a better view. The bag doesn't close completely (you can't have everything in life).

I'm deliriously happy with it, but I don't think I'll make another one with insides this complicated any time soon.For those of you who wanted a tutorial, sorry I got off track, but I promise to post a tutorial about making a basic tote bag very soon.

I love the flange-zipper method - I've used it on bags myself in the past. It is super easy (even for a novice zipper person like me!).

That is one awesome bag! I love the selveges, but the interior is above and beyond! What a lucky person your friend is!
I think the flange-zipper idea is a good and easy way to close the bag.
