The Apron

 I'll be visiting my granddaughter soon and we'll be cooking together. I sent her an apron when we started. I decided I needed to bring an apron with me when we cook. But I hadn't really given it much thought so I didn't have any food related fabric I could use. Or I didn't have enough of something else.

Then I remembered something I had started years ago...

At a local fabric store I bought a remnant from their upholstery section. I cut out the basic apron and then put it away. It took me a while to figure out where I had put it, but once I found it I ironed it, folded over the top and side edges and then attached the big patch pocket to the bottom part. I figured I could fold the fabric onto itself to keep the edges clean, but I had so much fabric I decide to make my own bias tape.

I had to do a search for instructions because I haven't made continuous bias tape in many many years. I just needed to remember how to get started. This fabric isn't mean to go through the standard bias tape tool, but we all know who has the bigger will. (ME.)

I sewed it to the wrong side, mitering all corners and easing it along the curved edges.

OF COURSE I joined the ends seamlessly. (I mean, what kind of quiltmaker do you think I am, anyway?)

Incidentally, I believe that if you know how to sew clothes you won't have any trouble learning how to make a quilt. But if you don't, learning to make a quilt is a lot harder. I learned how to sew when I was in fifth grade. My first project was a pleated wool skirt. It's scary to think that was almost 60 years ago.

I stopped for dinner, then folded the bias fabric over to the front and pinned it in place. (you know me and pins: love 'em, and use lots.)

Then I sewed the binding down and used the rest of the bias strip to make ties and a loop for the neck.

Clearly it is too big, and I set the pockets down too low, but for what I need it to do, it will be great. As you can see I fussy cut it so I could take advantage of the pattern. (I mean, like, duh...)

There is NOT enough fabric for a small apron for my granddaughter, which kinda bums me out, but then she's a dinosaur gal anyway.

DGD has a list of things she wants to cook with me, and I'm game for all of it. She wants to bake a cake, make brownies and cookies, and peanut butter energy balls. I want to introduce her to a Dutch Baby, and we will make lemon curd to go with it. She loves Lemon just as much as I do. She did have one special request.

 

"Can we please make tacos, Memere," she asked?
