Last weekend, as I watched my five and a half year old granddaughter struggle to make cupcake batter with a hand mixer and not quite soft enough butter, I had a thought, so I did a little research.
I thought about getting her a KitchenAid stand mixer. I've had one for years, and I adore it. I figured it would be an appropriate present when she was about 8 or so, given the cost, but as I watched she and her father try NOT to make a mess with the hand mixer, I rethought my idea.
It turns out that you can buy a refurbished, but fully warrantied KitchenAid mixer for about 40% less than MSRP. Since these mixers hover around the $500 range, that was a huge savings. I texted my DIL and asked if I'd be overstepping if I sent one of these to my California family now, and didn't wait two years. She said they would be fine with that. We discussed color options, since KA had 72 of them (Not all were available in the size option I had in mind however, and the pink was a wimpy pink anyway.)
So after our cupcake making adventure I went back online and pulled the trigger. A lovely Matcha Green 5 quart swing head stand mixer would be heading to DGD around June first.
Imagine my surprise when I received these photos yesterday. They are calling her "The Captain" because she has a Captain [dough] Hook.Today is my son's birthday. Can you say BIRTHDAY CAKE?

What a grand gift to " The Captain" and her dad. Hugh gave me a Kenwood mixer with all the attachments when I was 50 !!! And our younger daughter now uses it regularly, all those 31 years ago i think it was about $499 or similar , now about $2,300. And there is an Extra large model. And, drum roll.... I still have my Mum's hand egg beater, with a wooden handle, and that would date back to about 1937!!!!I look forward to seeing new recipes and cookies on your blog.
What a generous gift, Lynne, and what fantastic pictures! I look forward to stories and pictures of the many delicious creations you and your granddaughter will make together. How convenient for the mixer to arrive in time for your son's birthday cake! The wonders of technology that you are able to make two cakes and eat slices together from such a distance!
There will be no stopping your little baker now. And I predict there will be a run on those refurbished Kitchen Aid mixers now that you have let the cat out of the bag.
Being a grandma is great
What happy faces you created with this fabulous (life-time) gift - happy Birth(bake)day to your son :)
You are an outstanding Memere!
Nothing like a good story with my morning coffee. That sure was a win-win for everyone.
You are a wonderful person! I love your posts!
Yes, when you need to cream the butter and sugar "until light and fluffy" a hand mixer doesn't cut it. Far better than doing it by hand, but still... I think I'll go check out the KA site, as my old stand mixer kept cutting out last time I used it, at least no smoke (yet) though.
That's a great gift for your grand daughter. Not much can kill interest in a hobby faster than being stuck with tools not up to the task.
How fabulous! I’ve had mine for 42 years, they are such work horses!
How absolutely perfect!!!!! Happy Birthday to your son - I can smell the cake baking . . .
Awesome gift!! Those things last forever!!!
Good on you grandma.
I have never seen a green KA mixer. How fun. I have a boring white one that my daughter passed on to me when she bought the professional one. I think she will have a blast with it. As a kid, I always wanted the grown up version of any tool as the toy ones were wimpy. Congratulations, Grandma!
