Defying Gravity, Beauty Shots

 

I don't like to take beauty shots of my quilts in the same place, so I have to look around to find somepleace new and interesting.

I found a park bench under an arbor in one corner of the park. Red planters were nearby. 

I took like a zillion pictures (ok, only 43), and the top two were those I liked best.

I brought it to my sister before I took the beauty shots. She looked it over carefully, row by row, pointing out fabrics she recognized or especially liked.

In & Out of the Studio

 

As regular readers know I am a huge tennis fan, I generally hand sew the binding down on my quilts while "watching" tv, and yesterday I watched the tennis at Wimbledon. I started sewing the binding on the Defying Gravity quilt. I got one of the short sides done.

My pal Julie spent a week with me last month. In between our travels all over the state we made scrap slabs. I let Julie loose on a couple of bins of scraps and she sorted them by color and made lots of slabs. Now she's making her own scrap slab quilts, and having a lot of fun. You should check them out.

I put my studio back together the way I had it before Julie visited.

Almost. I left the folding table where I put it when I set up my second sewing machine for Julie. There used to be two stools there, but I never used them so the went in the yard sale. The table will be more useful as a place to put my blocks when I am working on a quilt.

Defying Gravity gets Bound

 

This is the Defying Gravity Quilt. It's a scrap slab triangle quilt. You can get the tutorial here, at my Etsy shop. 

 

Julie and I spent our time together making slabs and cutting triangles to make versions of this quilt.

 What's fun about this quilt, aside from the fact that you can make it into any number of designs, is that is uses your scraps.

This is the binding fabric. It's all flowers, but I thought it would be fun if I laid it out like piano keys.

Although I worked on this for a few hours the other night, I forgot to take pictures while I was working.

After I sew the binding on the back of the quilt, I fold it over to the front, and pin it all the way around. You can find out how and why I do it this way. I have a tutorial for that too.

Defying Gravity is a Flimsy

 

I keep forgetting to take pictures sometimes when I'm sewing a quilt together. So I stopped in the middle of sewing on the border to take this one.

I've sewn all the rows of the Defying Gravity quilt together, and added the border. It will be 65" x 77".

Top Three

 

I've been doing a bit of sewing. I sewed the top three rows of the Defying Gravity quilt together.

 

I also had another cooking session with my DGD. 

This time we made corn muffins. And my DGD did everything herself!

 She did a great job, and decided she loves corn muffins. (I use the recipe on the side of the package.) Here's the recipe for the energy balls we made last time. 

And YES! We are already planning our next kitchen adventure.

Three B's

 I have received the backing, border and binding fabrics for the Defying Gravity Quilt.

My sister loves bright colorful prints, so this backing is perfect, not only for the quilt, but for her.

The gold on cream at the top of this picture will be a narrow border all around the quilt. The bottom fabric will be the binding, and I'll arrange it just like this, kind of like a piano key.

Twelve Rows of Defying Gravity

 

All the blocks for the Defying Gravity quilt have been sewn together, and the blocks have been sewn into rows. The next task is to sew the rows together. I'm really happy with this. It will have a 2" wide border of an assortment of the cream fabrics arranged somewhat randomly.

Seven Rows of Defying Gravity

 

This is the bottom seven rows of the quilt I will call "Defying Gravity." Thank you, Chantal, for pointing out that the title of yesterday's post would make a great quilt name.

I am showing the bottom seven rows because these blocks are all sewn together and I am very happy with the way this is looking. You can click the photo to get a bigger, more detailed view.
