Everyone asks how I put the Flight of Fancy quilt together. They ask because the bird blocks are different sizes and they are not laid out in straight rows or columns. This page contains links to the blog posts where I described how I did it. There are no measurements or dimensions, but as I tell my students all the time, "I want you to make YOUR OWN QUILTS, not just copy mine."
Layout
This post tells how I figured out how to get from arranging blocks on the design wall to a layout I wanted to sew together.
Piecing The Bird Flimsy.
This post describes the steps I took before I could sew the blocks together.
How I Did It
This post describes how I sewed my birds into bigger "chunks" or panels and then assembled the panels into the finished flimsy.
If you would like to make your own free pieced birds, you can get my tutorial here, at my Etsy shop.
These birds are made without patterns or templates and they are not paper-pieced. The tutorial is an instant download, so you can get started right away.
