Scrap Slab Triangle Quilts

 These are all the scrap slab triangle quilts I have made. Each one is a bit different, has a different inspiration and something about the design is different from  each of the others. The top quilt is the newest.  If you want to make a scrap slab triangle quilt of your own, you can get my tutorial at my Etsy shop, here. You will also need a Tri-Recs ruler template, which you can get at any quilt shop.

This is Peonies, the 11th Scrap Slab Triangle Quilt. Up till now I have avoided arranging the triangles in a pinwheel, but for this quilt, I decided to use them. Here they are meant to be flowers in a garden, hence the name, Peonies.

Awash in a Sea of Blue 2023

This is "Awash in a Sea of Blue." The quilt is meant to "suggest" water so the blues are a full range of generally cool blues. The fabrics in the light side triangles are arranged so the two adjacent side triangles form a rhombus shape, and blend into each other. This also removes the idea that the basic block is a triangle inside a square. This is a very simple design, but relies on accurate piecing so the points are all sharp and the corners match perfectly so the shapes are very distinct.

This is Black Abacus. The black triangles are fabric with a black background with bright colors. The lighter triangles are various whites and creams, but I have arranged them so they are adjacent to similar fabrics, so the basic block disappears and the lights create interesting shapes. I love this one.

Defying Gravity, 2022

This quilt was made from my leftover scrap slab triangles from other quilts. It just goes to show how color placement can make a unique quilt. Here the side triangles have colors on white or cream backgrounds.

All Together Now, 2020-2021

This version was made with blacks with colors. Some of the light triangles have colors on a white background in addition to black on white. Made this way, with two basic colors, the quilt becomes a very graphic, yet modern, statement.

Whirlygig, 2018-2019

 This version of the quilt emphasizes symmetry. Here the colored diamonds are arranged into lazy hexagons, with horizontal diamonds formed by two colored triangles in the center of each one. The colors are also arranged regularly. As I worked out the design in my sketchbook, I liked the lower edges of those hexagon shapes, so I allowed the design to fall away at the bottom to emphasize those shapes. To me if feels like they are banners fluttering in the wind.

Wavelength, 2018

 In this version, I wanted to make the black and white side triangles do a kind of wave by surrounding each diamond with dark and light triangles.

Sparkling Winkel, 2017

 I was inspired by the colors in my granddaughter's toy: red, yellow, light and dark blues, and a red. The wide variety of black on white fabrics that make up the background help this quilt "sparkle."

Snow Day, 2017

 I was inspired by the view outside my window in late winter - the shadows on the snow in the woodland behind my house. The colors are spare and cool, and the relatively light black on white fabrics contribute to the cool, snowy feeling of this quilt.

Treasure Trove, 2017

 This quilt was inspired by the cool colors in a necklace I own - jewel tones of turquoise, sapphire, ruby, amber and emerald green.

Fruit Loops, 2016

This is the first scrap slabs quilt. I made triangle blocks of colors from my scrap bins. I chose these to start with because they are among my favorite colors - bright and happy. I had intended to make blocks with all the colors from my scrap bins before I designed a quilt, but these colors were so happy I just had to start playing.  This is a completely random arrangement. The only rule was that blocks of the same color couldn't be next to each other.
