Twelve Rows of Defying Gravity

 

All the blocks for the Defying Gravity quilt have been sewn together, and the blocks have been sewn into rows. The next task is to sew the rows together. I'm really happy with this. It will have a 2" wide border of an assortment of the cream fabrics arranged somewhat randomly.

Defying Gravity

 

I'm continuing to sew the blocks together on the Ripples quilt. I'm working my way up from the bottom so it can truly be said that I am defying gravity.

Fine Tuning Ripples

The other day I thought the green in the upper left was too dark, and wondered if a lighter green was better. Clearly it isn't.

I tried putting the dark green back in and rearrange the blocks. This (above) wasn't perfect, but I felt it was better.

Sure, this is basically a rainbow, or a color wheel, and I wanted the colors to flow from one to the other, but I didn't want it to be regular or too predictable. So once I got something I liked in the upper left, I continued to work my way down. rearranging blocks, and making new blocks where I needed. Unless you click (and then click the pictures again) you probably won't notice many changes.

In the end, I had added light green blocks, lavender blocks, red blocks and red violet blocks.  I like this, and I'll sew it together.

Snow Day!

 

We are expecting LOTS of snow today. I'm in that pink 12-20" area on the right. We shall see.

This is what it looks like out my side door as I write this as 8 AM on Saturday. It's just barely starting.

This is what the radar looks like now. I'm at the blue dot, so you can see it's coming, but isn't here yet.

When storms like this come, the grocery stores are jammed with folks stocking up. I went out last night and laughed when I saw so many empty shelves. I got some ground beef (actually I got a "meatloaf mix of ground pork, beef and veal) to make meatballs. I've got a lot of mushrooms so I'm going to make a meatball mushroom stroganoff to eat over wide noodles. Nice, warm and cozy. But I digress.

What did I do on my way home?

I went to the car wash.

Yeah, I know most people do it the other way around - go to the car wash afterwards when your car is coated with greasy dirt and salt - but you have to wait in a long line on those days. There was no line last night, and besides, if my car is cleaner and slipperier, then the snow and crud should slide right off.

Well, that's my theory and I am sticking with it.

While it snows, I'll be in the studio, and yes, that is the same towel that inspired the painting which inspired the quilt.

Ripples and Waves

 

I'm playing with these colored triangular scrap slabs. In the photo above I have added creamish side triangles throughout. I just threw stuff on the wall. Nothing about the arrangement above is final. I started moving the colors around so I wouldn't have horizontal rows of colored diamonds.

I like the way the green diamonds in the upper left look. I like the pattern they make, but the value might be too dark. (Maybe they should be a limey green, for example.) It also needs more reds and maybe pinks and purples...

I've made some red triangles and added them. Putting them in made me shift everything else around. I like the arrangement a bit better, but it still needs work.

I thought there was too much red on one side, so I removed one diamond on the right, and a couple triangles on the left side that I didn't feel worked as well.

I like the idea of the colors this way better than the original, but I can see that I need to make a few more blocks and I'm going to have to move everything around to make it work.

What else is new?

Ripples

 

About a month ago I showed you this.

I continued playing with my leftover blocks and got this. I like it a lot. I should be working on the student bird quilt, but this is on the design wall, and lately the step stool and I haven't been on good terms, so I am going to finish this first.

I've decided to use creams as side triangles on this quilt, and I have been cutting them from the leftover pieces from the Allegretto quilt.

I cut out a bunch of side triangles and threw them up on the wall. Like I've said before, once I get the pieces on the design wall is just a starting point. As an example, the arrangement above is light on the top and dark on the bottom. That will change too.
