Right Church, Wrong Pew

This is the layout with the brown triangles and black on white side triangles. I stepped back and looked...

WHAT was I thinking? CLEARLYthe black on white side triangles were just plain WRONG! I had my box of leftover side triangles out, so I was not looking (or thinking) properly. It was apparent the side triangles needed to be CREAM or BEIGE...

Sigh.

Back to the cutting table.

I had even bought a large selection of creams and beiges for just this purpose back in November. Must have had a lot on my mind. (ya think?)

This is SO CLEARLY so much better. Just goes to show you...

"No matter how far you've gone down the wrong road, turn back!"

I will start sewing this together!

This is a Scrap Slab Triangle Quilt, and is mostly made from scraps. If you would like to make one, you can get my tutorial here, at my Etsy shop.

PS, My California family is not near the areas burning in LA right now, although some of the places we have visited have been affected.

Snow!

Julie texted me last night "Weather app says you are to have FIFTEEN INCHES of snow in the next 24 hours - holy catfish!!!"

I smiled when I read it. It wasn't news here. We've all known about this for days. I had my groceries delivered after work on Thursday and gassed up my car on Friday. As I drove past the local grocery store on my way home I could see the parking lot was FULL! Nothing out of the ordinary just before a big storm.

I'm all set. In fact, the house is clean. The laundry is done, the sheets and towels have been changed. The bathrooms are clean, the floors washed. The Roomba made a trip around the house so no vacuuming is needed. My car is gassed up and the snow removal plans are made. I have no place to go, so I plan to enjoy the snow day, reading, sewing, maybe a bit of cooking and watching TV. Sounds fun to me.

Snow Day Beauty Shots

Since the end of October when I finished Snow Day, I haven't had an opportunity to take beauty shots of the quilt. Saturday was greyish, but the light was good for taking pictures outside.

The snow is mostly gone, and I wanted to take pictures of the quilt outside while it was still winter. I wanted the backdrop to be dull so the colors of the quilt would shine through.

And since the arrangement of the blocks is so important in how the quilt looks, I didn't crumple it.

More binding

I have sewn down the binding around half the Snow Day quilt, and pinned down the rest, so I am moving right along.

This is a detail of the Snow Day quilt. I've made it from scrap slabs. You can make a scrap slab triangle quilt too. Get my tutorial here at my Etsy shop.

In other totally non quilt related stuff, yesterday I celebrated 29 years of working at the same company.  Didn't see that coming 29 years ago.

Loup de Lou

While watching Millie's pals, the guys named Pat, last night, I finished sewing the binding all around the third Scrap Slab quilt, Snow Day.

Now I can start sewing the binding down. Regular readers know I sew mine on the front of the quilt because I like it that way, and because my blindstitching is invisible. More information about that here.

If you are interested in making a Scrap Slab quilt of your own, you can buy my tutorial here.

Snowy Day

What do you do when you're staying home because you are supposed to get 16-24" (41-61 cm) of snow? The New York Times has a complete list you can read about here. As for me...

You bake cookies. I like these Salted Tahini Chocolate Chip Cookies.

You work on a quilt. Here I am sewing the binding on the Peppermint Swirl quilt.

You watch TV. I'm a tennis fan, and will be watching the matches at Indian Wells in California. As I write this I am watching the reruns from last night. These matches will take place later today.

Speaking of Snow Days...

When I was in California we had dinner with my brother, who was driving up to Yosemite from Mexico. I was showing him photos of my recent quilts and he said if he didn't have this one, Triangle Dance, he would ask for my newest, Snow Day, which he really liked.

Scrap Slab Triangle Quilts

Here are the three scrap slab (trying saying THAT three times fast) quilts:

Fruit Loops, Nov-Dec 2016

Treasure Trove, Dec 2016

Snow Day, Jan - Feb 2017

All are made with one block, a colored scrappy slab built triangle and two side triangles in black on white.

And I used these templates.

A reminder that you can click the photos to enlarge, and then click again to supersize so you can see all the gory details.

Snow Day Details

I thought you might like a couple of Snow Day close ups.

I like that the quilt has a fox in it.

Here's the obligatory crumpled shot (another nod to my pal Julie)

Here's the finished flimsy.

Tomorrow, I will post photos of all three scrap slab triangle quilts.

Snow Day

Wow!

Thank you to all who commented yesterday. What a wonderful selection of names for this quilt. In the end, there was one that completely encapsulated all this quilt was about without getting too obscure or too cute. That was "Snow Day."

I am adding a border of random lengths of black and white fabrics that aren't too dark. The binding will also be a black and white fabric, but a mostly white one, and I've decided to have one slice of a bright color somewhere on the binding, just to keep up this idea of colors appearing and disappearing between the gusts of snow and the wind blowing the tree branches.
