As You Wish

The Black Box, about 82" high  x 65" wide. Original design, made by me, Lynne Tyler without templates, patterns and NOT paper-pieced.

It also exhibits one of my most profound beliefs, that you should leave the evidence of your hand in your work. You do not want anybody to think it was made by a machine. Sometimes if it's too "perfect" it's boring, static and mechanical. One of the things I like best about "free piecing" is that it keeps the energy, the verve, the spark, the liveliness, intact.

I know there are lots of quilters who disagree, but I came from the Art world, where the purpose of Art is to elicit emotions, and I try to bring that to my quilts.

**btw, I've disabled (finally!) the Lightbox feature so when you click the photo, you can then click again to enlarge it and see the details.

  2. Fabulous! And I so agree with you about perfection. I saw a show of Paula Nadlestern's work a few years ago and she said the same thing. She always makes a few "mistakes" to keep the work lively.

  8. WOW! I remember when you first mentioned your idea of this quilt....you could not have done another thing to make it any more perfect! I am thrilled with the photo, the thought of seeing it in person is overwhelming.

    My heart flutters with excitement!!!!!!

Anyone that has anything negative to say about, really doesn't 'get it' and that you will never change. It is 'your' piece and 'YOU' have every right to shine with PRIDE!!!! i know you are!

    I GET IT!!!!!!!!!! LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with you regarding leaving the humanity finger print in a quilt. Complete perfection is very over rated :o)

  12. Congratulations on sticking with it and getting just what you wanted out of this project.

I like being able to magnify the photo. I thought I'd try that on my blog, but when I removed the lightbox feature, you can't click a second time for magnification. Oh, well.

    Good job here !

  14. I completely agree with your quilting philosophy. I wouldn't like to buy a kit, for example, because I don;t want to make someone else's quilt, I want to make mine, even if mine isn't as nice, it's still mine!

  17. Oh Lynne, it's so wonderful! I agree with you about a quilt shouldn't be perfect but should have a personality. The first emotion this quilt elicits is for me is....joy.

  18. Wow, wow, wow! The flimsy is magical, indeed! Thank you for sharing its process, proving it's really not magic, but decisions and play and work that make art!
