The Grand Prismatic

As soon as I got up this morning and read the suggestions for the name for this quilt, it came to me.

The Grand Prismatic is the name of a famous spring in Yellowstone Park.

I thought it should also be the name for this quilt.

After dragging though the woods around the back of my house,

I ran it though the washing machine with a couple of color catchers.

I wash every single piece of fabric that comes into this house in warm water with detergent before I bring into the sewing studio to get cut up for a quilt. Even so, the color of these two color catchers** that came out of the wash with the quilt ought to tell you something.

**Color catchers are something you put in the washing machine to catch the stray dye that may run from whatever it is you are washing. It's supposed to make it possible for you to wash white items with colored things and not have your white stuff come out tinted.  So these two above have pulled out quite a bit of dye from The Great Prismatic quilt I washed. Better on those two sheets than on the white or light colored parts of the quilt.

So....what do you do with your color catchers? I mean after you use them and they turn beautiful colors?

The quilt is beautiful, such lovely bright colors. I have never heard of color catchers either.

Perfect name for your quilt. I saved the instruction post to Evernote. After my FIL died this summer I was having a hard time getting my first quilt started so I decided to wash and sort all...well a lot...of my fabrics. Some said I was nuts and it is better not to wash first but I still followed my gut instinct. Thank you for confirming that the time was worth the effort. I'll be sure to use Color Catcher when I wash the quilt as well.
xx, Carol
