Five Feet

OK.. I know you can only see two feet. But I am five feet tall, and when I buy pants, this happens a lot.

Sure, I can sew. Sure, I can hem a pair of pants, but to tell the truth, this kind of sewing has zero appeal to me.

And I just bought four pair of pants, and they all need to be shortened.

(Sigh)

My sister has the same problem with her trousers. However taking them up sometimes spoils the cut and they don't look right. Is there no place you can buy shorter length legs?

I know how you feel, I'm 5'2" and was always having to chop off so much fabric that, as Judith said - then spoils the cut. I now try and only buy "capri" length or I buy from outlets that stock short length trousers.

Happy Sewing!

So funny, you are just like me. That has absolutely no appeal to me either. Mending and hemming are just not my bag. I always complain that the manufacturers make pants for giants.

Can you buy petites? Mommy gets annoyed because there is a whole section for petites and 2 things in the store that come in tall. Mommy never has to hem pants because she is 5'9", but all her pants are pretty much the same. Boring.

I absolutely agree. Terible waste of sewing time. And you have to be at least 5'4" for petites to fit right. Who thinks up these sizes anyway!

Well, one good thing. At least you don't REALLY have 5 feet, cuz then you'd have to do 20 hems instead of 8.

I have the opposite problem, but I always was elected to do the hems for my mother-in-law who was 5'2" at her tallest. We got smart and started purchasing the "capri" version of pants, which for her, was a perfect pant length and needed no adjustment.

Oh, I hear you! I don't have to hem my pants, but I always have to shorten the sleeves on anything with long sleeves. So you KNOW I don't buy many long sleeve tops.

Dry-cleaners. eight bucks a pair. Makes me so happy to not hem pants, and she is better at it than I am, anyway.

Funny picture! I have the opposite problem being over 5'8" and you KNOW they don't make hems with more than 3/4" deep to let down! Mending is not sewing, it is drudgery. Alas, I had to sew three trouser clasps on a pair of pants last week so I could have something to wear; they had been hanging in my sewing room for three months. Took me only 15 minutes but I didn't enjoy it!

I'm with Woolywoman. the dry cleaner will do it, for little money and it frees up my sewing time for something rewarding. I too am 5' tall. Petites are still too long, but better than the misses pants.
