A Four Letter Word

Here is my four-letter word for Tonya. I didn't want to do it in all caps, because I didn't want it to seem like a command: GROW! I wanted it to be encouraging, so a capital G and lower case for the rest. And the block is 6-1/2" x 12-1/2".

My sister and I made a quilt for our mother. How do you make half a quilt? We divided up the quilt into 24 blocks, 18-1/2" x 24-1/2". We bought about 12 to 16 1/2 yard cuts of fabric, divided them half and used fabric from our own stashes and the chosen fabrics. The plan was to made 12 blocks each, and alternate them.

I made 12 perfect 18-1/2" x 24-1/2" blocks. My sister, bless her, made her blocks bigger than that, and each one unique and individual. I had to square them all, then trim them all down to the right size. It drove me absolutely crazy.

The quilt was a great hit with our Mom. You can't tell where my sister's blocks end, and mine begin, unless you look very closely, and even then it's pretty tough. My sister LOVES to tell the story about how I had to trim all her blocks to size.

And I still roll my eyes.

Which is why the block for Tonya is -exactly- 6-1/2" x 12-1/2".

Grow looks great! I did have to laugh at your sister - I'm much closer to her on that spectrum of getting blocks the right size. Lovely quilt the two of you made.

I love how all the letters in 'grow' are different fabrics, the background is several fabrics, and yet you made the word pop. And it's just so wonderful that you and your sister made a quilt together!

Grow is great! I love to work together on quilts. But I am much more like you. It would have driven me crazy as well. But then again you didn't have to create half the blocks, just cut them to size. Not such a bad deal after all and really wonderful results!

Love 'grow' - your letters are amazing. I have to admit I'm more like your sister than you...my blocks are always 'originals'!

There's something about your "grow" that is so soothing, and peaceful, and -- yes -- encouraging! The colors are great, but I think it's your well-thought intention that makes it so. Just lovely.

Wow what a great gift and of course the story will go with it forever.
Maybe you should write it down and save it as the history of the quilt.

Who wouldn't be thrilled with the quilt its great!

Happy Sewing,
Kim

I love "Grow" it's super. And the quilt is lovely. News flash--I have to trim my blocks to size all the time. I "never, well hardly ever" get them all the same at any time.

What a happy quilt you and your sister made - and how wonderful your mother must have felt when she saw such a beautiful collaborative project made with love from her two girls.
